The Surf Club, that old bastion of Miami Beach has been sold to a Turkish conglomerate for $116 milhão. The Surf Club’s storied history is peppered with many great names of the twentieth century, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, General MacArthur, Elizabeth Taylor, and Winston Churchill (he painted watercolors in his cabana).
An affiliate of the Nadim Achi-led Fort Capital Management has merged with The Surf Club in Surfside, where it plans condos and a five-star hotel, after paying $116 million for the transaction.
The deal for the ’30s era property, which spans nearly 9 acres and includes more than 800 feet of oceanfront, involved buying proprietor certificates of membership, the most expensive memberships in the club. The deal is technically a merger between The Surf Club and the Fort Capital affiliate.
“The Surf Club shall emerge as the remaining entity that will then redeem from the proprietor members the membership certificates in exchange for the $116 milhão,” said Miami-based attorney Robert Zarco of Zarco Einhorn Salkowski & Brito.
Zarco is not only The Surf Club’s general counsel but he is also a proprietor member.
Achi’s group includes a large conglomerate from Turkey called Koc Group, the Boston-based Cabot family and funds from families in both Peru and Brazil. Fort Capital has been working on the deal for the property, at 9011 Collins Ave., for several months. The development plan includes preserving the Surf Club’s historic elements, creating a spa and three towers, one housing a five-star hotel and two that will be home to condos.
